Gears are crucial basic components used in a wide range of industries, almost every sector of the national economy. The gear industry is a technology-intensive and capital-intensive sector within the machinery industry. Currently, the gear industry is the largest sector among basic mechanical components in China. Last year, the national output value of the gear industry was around 230 billion yuan, ranking first in the world. Over the past 30 years, my country's gear industry has experienced rapid development, with an average growth rate of 18%; however, in the past three years, the industry's output value has stagnated, and the trade deficit has widened. It should be said that the past three years have also been a period of intensive internal improvement, substantial technological innovation, and transformation and upgrading for the gear industry. Comprehensive breakthroughs in key technologies that have long hindered the industry's development, improvements in product quality, and the opportunities provided by the national economic transformation and upgrading have ushered in a new stage of development for my country's gear industry.
30 Years Have Shaped a Powerful Industry
The development of China's gear industry over the past 30 years has seen three growth peaks, commonly referred to as three growth poles.
Twenty-five years ago, the development of motorcycle gears propelled my country's gear industry output from tens of billions of yuan to over 20 billion yuan. Sixteen years ago, with China's accession to the WTO as a turning point, the development of automotive gears boosted the industry's output from several hundred billion yuan to approximately 130 billion yuan, marking the second growth pole in the gear industry. Ten years ago, the development of wind power and construction machinery gears brought the third growth pole, increasing the industry's output by nearly 200 billion yuan. Over the past five years, my country's gear industry has entered a period of relatively stable development, with a slight dip in output in 2015.
Currently, there are nearly 1,000 gear companies nationwide, with over 300 key enterprises and more than 150 companies exceeding 100 million yuan in sales. A number of companies have annual sales exceeding 2 billion yuan, and two have surpassed 10 billion yuan. Several large state-owned enterprises are the backbone of the gear industry, while private enterprises have become the main force in the market.
Now, China has become a major gear manufacturing country, and Chinese gear reducer companies have fully integrated into the global supply chain. More importantly, my country's gear industry has formed the world's most complete industrial system, covering virtually all areas of gear products. In terms of products, China's gear industry has historically transitioned from low-end to mid-range, and some high-end products have emerged.
The localization of industries such as transmissions is a breakthrough point.
In recent years, the gear industry has been asking itself: Where is the industry's development direction? Where are our growth points? I believe that the development of the fourth pole is a comprehensive process involving multiple aspects: the full industrialization of domestically produced automatic transmissions, precision reducers primarily for robotics, and high-speed train gearboxes.

Automatic transmissions have long been a major weakness in my country's gear industry. For over 20 years, the entire industry has invested heavily in research and development, but industrialization progress has been unsatisfactory. The gear industry's trade deficit stems from the massive imports of automatic transmissions, reaching over $16 billion in 2015 according to customs statistics. Encouragingly, after long-term efforts, the industrialization of automatic transmissions has entered a substantial stage and is poised for a development boom. my country has achieved independent innovation in AT, AMT, CVT, DCT, and hybrid transmissions, particularly in AT and CVT. It is estimated that in the next few years, when domestically produced automatic transmissions reach 5 million units, the structure of the domestic transmission industry will undergo a complete transformation.
Currently, precision reducers are mainly used in industrial robots, CNC machine tools, and automated equipment. In the coming years, my country's industrial robot industry will experience rapid development, providing a broad market prospect for high-precision, high-performance joint reducers. Unfortunately, my country has long relied on imports for precision reducers for robots; encouragingly, this situation is about to change. Through industry-wide "tracking research" and "independent innovation," coupled with strong government support, the industrialization of various types of RV and harmonic reducers for robots is steadily progressing. A production capacity of 1 million units is expected within the next three years, supporting the development of my country's robotics and intelligent equipment industry.
my country's high-speed trains are a "golden name card" of Chinese manufacturing. However, behind the rise of China's high-end equipment lies the constraint of lagging behind in core components. Gearboxes are the core component for power transmission in high-speed trains, and their performance directly determines the reliability and safety of train operation. The world's high-speed train gearbox market is completely monopolized by companies from Germany and Japan. Compared to existing high-speed rail systems abroad, China's high-speed rail, due to its vast territory, large temperature differences between north and south, long operating distances, high speeds, and complex and variable operating conditions over extended periods, places even more stringent demands on the reliability and performance of gearboxes. To address the gearbox challenges hindering high-speed rail development, Chinese companies, with government support, have taken a different approach, solving problems related to temperature rise, vibration, lightweighting, and reliability in high-speed rail gearboxes. They have developed integrated design methods, created products with independent intellectual property rights, replaced foreign products, and achieved industrialization.
Independent innovation has become the main theme of the gear industry.
The gear industry is entering its fourth growth phase, with independent innovation becoming the dominant theme. My research shows that the previous three phases of growth in China's gear industry mainly benefited from the introduction, assimilation, and reinvention of technologies. This fourth phase of development provides an opportunity for a reshuffling of the gear industry, with new leading companies emerging and some companies relying on past successes losing development opportunities or even exiting the market.
It should be said that currently, the domestic supporting equipment industry cannot meet the demand for this fourth growth phase in the gear industry. Gear-related industries should seize this opportunity to develop themselves while simultaneously promoting the faster development of the fourth growth phase in the gear industry. These foundations include talent, technology, management, and the supporting industrial chain. Future output value will exceed 300 billion yuan, ultimately transforming my country from a major gear manufacturing country into a gear manufacturing powerhouse.
